Dehorning or disbudding is the process of preventing or removing horn development in young goats. It may be practiced in some production systems to reduce the risk of injuries among animals and handlers and to make housing and handling easier. The procedure is generally more effective when performed at a young age before the horn becomes well developed.
Because dehorning can cause pain and complications if performed incorrectly, it should be carried out by a trained person using appropriate equipment and suitable pain-control and animal-welfare practices. Older goats with fully developed horns require more complicated procedures and greater care. Local veterinary guidance should be followed regarding the appropriate method and timing.
