Grading up is a breeding strategy used to improve the performance of goats by repeatedly mating local or non-descript females with selected males of a desired breed. The aim is to gradually increase the desirable characteristics of the selected breed while retaining useful traits of the local animals, such as adaptation to the local climate, feed resources, and management conditions.
In each generation, suitable offspring are selected based on characteristics such as growth rate, body size, reproductive performance, milk production, meat characteristics, and overall health. Careful selection and proper record keeping are essential because grading up is a gradual process and requires several generations to achieve consistent improvement.
