Goat farming attracts many farmers and new entrepreneurs because goats can be raised under a variety of production systems and can provide multiple products, including meat, milk, breeding animals, manure, and in some breeds fibre. Goats can also be integrated with crop farming, allowing suitable crop residues and farm resources to be utilised as part of the production system.
Interest in goat farming is also linked to the possibility of starting at different herd sizes and gradually expanding the enterprise. However, successful goat farming still requires appropriate housing, nutrition, breeding, health care, labour, record keeping, and access to markets. Careful planning is therefore important before making an investment.
