Aquaculture is the controlled farming of fish and other aquatic organisms in ponds, tanks, cages, or other suitable water systems. In an integrated farming system, aquaculture can be combined with crop and livestock production, allowing available farm resources to be used more efficiently. For example, properly managed nutrient-rich water from certain farm activities may support plant production, while agricultural by-products can sometimes be used as inputs after appropriate treatment.
Successful integrated aquaculture requires good water quality, suitable fish species, adequate feeding, proper stocking density, and regular monitoring of water parameters. The pond or tank should be maintained to prevent excessive pollution, disease, and oxygen depletion. When carefully planned, fish production can provide an additional source of food and farm income while making better use of available water resources.
