Portreath landowner breeding her own rare goat meat

A LANDOWNER has taken a step away from farming more traditional livestock by increasing her herd of goats bred for meat.

Wendy Kitchen, from Primrose Farm in Portreath, took on the animals last year and believes she is the only person in Cornwall breeding the African Boer goats.

She began by producing three goats and is now experiencing high demand, selling the meat to businesses such as Tresillian Garden Centre, Trelowarren Estate and Indian restaurants.

She said: “My herd consists of African Boer goats, who are stocky meat goats and saanens, who make great mothers and milkers.

“I initially tried farming pigs but the cost of feeding them was too high and they damaged the land.

“My husband and I were watching a programme one night and thought to ourselves that nobody else around here was breeding this type of goat so why not give it a try.

“They are all outdoor-reared and freely roam around our five acres.”
